Shingles is infection from the Herpes-zoster virus. If you have had chicken pox previously, then you may get Shingles which happens when the chicken pox virus reactivates. In about 10-15% of shingles cases, even after the infection has subsided, pain can persist in the area where the shingles rash had appeared, and this is known as Post-herpetic Neuralgia or PHN. The symptoms occur in a nerve distribution pattern. The most common distribution is like a band around one side of the trunk, but it can also affect the arm, or leg, or even the face.

Symptoms of Shingles/ PHN:

  • Burning or tingling pain
  • Itching or numbness, usually on one side of the body
  • Red rash
  • Small blisters which appear a few days after the rash
  • Pain and weakness that continues even after the rash has subsided.

Note: A rash or blisters that appear on the face or near the eye require immediate treatment. If neglected, it can lead to loss of vision, hearing or facial paralysis.
